It's That Time of Year

It was Halloween yesterday, meaning it's the season for the annual Respiratory protection multi-company drill. I caught B-shift at the tower yesterday, the were kind enough to let me take a few pictures.

Don.

Run.

Climb.

Descend.

Squeeze

Run.

Drag.

Pull.

Run.
Climb.

Descend.

Run.

Crawl.

Run.

Recover.

Suck that bottle empty and record the time.

I gotta be honest, I don't miss this drill one bit. Guys in their 20s love it. People in their 30s are okay with it. 40+ firefighters are annoyed by it and guys over 50 hate it. The one guy left on the job who is in his 60's probably loves it, he is not normal.

This drill is part of our mandated respiratory protection program, which also includes class time and a physical. It also shows who the animals are.

I must say, it is a lot more fun shooting it than it is to participate in it.

Thanks for reading,
Schmoe

  1. I'm 42 now, but I still wish my dept had a test like that. Every time we have a similar drill the fat and lazy bail out on personal time.

Is there any negative connotation within the dept to being substantially below the average?

  2. Just wanted to say Cap, these photos are excellent. The 'pull shot' in particular is great. I enjoy your blog and your photos. Keep up the good work and enjoy your retirement.

  3. John - Not officially, but the unofficial negative feedback can be a little tough. Part of that also has to do with overall reputation, with some allowance for age etc.

Mike - Thanks, I am glad that you enjoy them. I sure enjoy taking them!
